HAUNTING SPIEGELWORLD
JUST A BIT OF SEX | October 31st 2008From ECONOMIST.COM
Many complain that the Disneyification of Broadway has made it impossible to find sexy entertainment in New York. But for a few more days, a bit of titillating fun can be found on Pier 17 in downtown Manhattan, where Spiegelworld has set up shop for a third year. In a beautiful old circus pavilion from the 1920s, something called a spiegeltent, performances of spicy cabaret, burlesque and blue comedy are staged nightly. (The Economist reviewed the shows last summer: "A circus for grown-ups") For its last weekend in New York, Spiegelworld is hosting a big Halloween party tonight, with performances and dancing until late.
The Economist talked to some members of the creative team behind Spiegelworld, a motley crew of Australians. They were very candid about the unexpected liberties of working in such an intimate space, and on such a small stage. Check out the interview and slide show. ~ EMILY BOBROW
